On Thursday 14 October 2021, the annual SECAmb awards for Sussex and Surrey were held at Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking. This was part virtual, part attended with limited numbers attending due to restrictions.

Team of the Year was awarded to all of the Trust’s Community First Responders, SECAmb’s volunteer chaplains and its Community Resilience Team.

Due to further Covid restrictions after the award ceremony, the certificate and medal were issued to the team in June 2022.

Speaking for Steyning Area First Responders, team lead Liz Bull said:

“Whilst the CFR teams were initially stood down in March 2020, two team members fit tested for masks and retrained in the new Covid 19 protocols and went back to responding.

“Others helped at the vaccination tent in a carpark in Crawley where the frontline Paramedics, co-responders and emergency services received their first vaccines. Chilly at times as it was wintertime, but a great experience to be able meet up with the emergency services.

“Help from the SAFeR team was also provided through volunteering to drive a welfare van to the hospitals in the area to support the paramedics by supplying, tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks as access into the hospitals was limited. This was greatly appreciated by the paramedics.

“One of our team members also helped with relocating ambulances to areas of greatest need.

“All in all a busy time for the team.”
